WESCO STUDENTS PROTEST NEW UCC POLICY

Students of Wesley College of Education in Kumasi today staged a peaceful demonstration on campus in protest against a policy by the University of Cape Coast to dismiss students who failed in their re-sit examination.

The university is asking all students who have failed in their second attempt to redeem themselves after failing in more than one subject.

The policy is being implemented in all the Colleges of Education, as part of their upgrading to a tertiary status. A visit to the campus saw students who had limited the demonstration around the dormitories amidst heavy police presence.

One of the students who acted as a spokesperson said the affected students should rather be asked to continue with their education while being offered the opportunity to redeem themselves instead of being dismissed outright, which they claim could ruin their future.

The Principal of the College, Benjamin Fameye however dismissed the claim by the students, saying they are aware of the policy and its implication.

He was therefore surprised that the students had resorted to demonstrate to register their protest.

Mr. Fameye said the police were called in to ensure that properties on campus were not destroyed.

Twenty-eight students are reported to have been affected by the policy and are therefore being counseled on the psychological and social effects of the policy on their future.
