ASOKWA MP HANDS OVER RENOVATED SOCCRE FIELD TO AHINSAN

The Member of Parliament for Asokwa in Kumasi, Madam Patricia Appiagyei, has handed over to the Ahinsan community a rehabilitated football field which was entirely refurbished from her own funds.

The field, belonging to the Ahinsan M/A Primary school but made available to the community for use, has now been re-named ‘Patricia Appiagyei Green Soccer Park’.

The Ahinsan soccer field has for several years helped to unearth many nationally renowned footballers such as Isaac Owusu of the 1993 Under-17 Black Starlets fame, Daniel Acquah, Michael Abu, Elvis Opoku, George Siaw and John Cudjoe of Asante Kotoko fame.

It also served as the home grounds of some Division One football clubs.

The field previously was in a very bad state as it had no grass on it and had no proper shape thereby creating confusion among the competing teams in terms of the application of the rules of the game.

Madam Appiagyei explained that while watching a soccer competition on the field about three years ago, she witnessed the serious injury to one of the players mainly due to the bad nature of the park.

Again, she realized that the field, for many years, served as the venue for the annual inter-community soccer competition among teams from the various communities within the Asokwa Constituency.

Therefore, putting the park in good shape to engender good and fair football competition to unify residents, especially the youth, in the constituency became her concern.

Madam Appiagyei also presented 35 footballs and four sets of jerseys to teams that are competing in the Christmas ‘Sompahemaa Inter-Communities’ soccer gala competition taking place on the field.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Kojo Bonsu commended the MP for rehabilitating the field.

According to him, even though he and the MP belong to different political parties, politics must be seen as means for socio-economic development and social wellbeing, and not to cause divisions among the people.

Mr. Kojo Bonsu therefore commended Madam Appiagyei for the initiative and also promised to donate a mower for the maintenance of the field.
