POLICE SEIZE SOPHISTICATED ARMS/AMMUNITIONS FROM BURKINABE

The Police in the Ashanti region have retrieved a quantity of highly sophisticated arms and ammunition from a 72-year old Burkinabe, Moro Sata at Akwatialine in Kumasi.

Mr. Sata is also in police custody assisting the police with their investigations into the matter.

Addressing the media in Kumasi in connection with the arms seizure, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCoP Nathan Kofi Boakye explained that the arrest of the Burkinabe followed an intelligence gathered by the Police after which the Manhyia Division carried out an operation leading to the retrieval of the arms and ammunition from the bedroom of the suspect.

The Regional Police Commander described the arms and ammunition as the biggest booty the police have made since his assumption of duty in the region more than two years ago.

The arms include 11 AK47, G3, a machine gun with rounds of ammunition and sidearm. Others include a trunk-load of different types of ammunition with six of them said to be anti-aircraft as they are used to shoot down aircrafts mostly in conflict areas.

The other types of ammunition are 12 point-seven millimeter, AAA, AK47 tracer ammunition and G3 ammunition.

DCoP Kofi Boakye said the suspect has told the Police that he receives his supplies from some West African countries including the Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Niger.

He also allegedly named one Abdul Kadri Aria in the Ivory Coast as his main supplier in that country, adding that Ghana serves as both a transit and distribution point for both local people and other neighbouring nations.

DCoP Kofi Boakye disclosed also that four persons, whose names have been withheld, have also been arrested for allegedly taking their arms and ammunition supplies from Sata for their suspected armed robbery operations in the Ashanti region.

He assured that everything is being done by the Police to ensure a peaceful society for the law abiding people to go about their legal activities, especially before, during and after the Christmas.
