DCoP Nathan Kofi Boakye |
There is currently only one known hardened
criminal operating in the Ashanti region. One Bonti Killer, said to have taken
part in a number of violent crimes in the region is on the Police wanted list
and is being seriously pursued.
The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCoP
Nathan Kofi Boakye disclosed this in Kumasi in his first ever interaction with
Assembly Members, Unit Committee Chairpersons, Community Watchdog
representatives and civil society to foster a closer working relation towards
effective crime combat in the region, especially the capital, Kumasi.
The Regional
Commander noted that since his assumption of responsibility of the region
nearly two years ago, remarkable achievements in the fight against all manner
of crimes has been made saying that the Ashanti region is presently the most disciplined
region in Ghana.
According to him, many of the hitherto known individuals and
gangs who terrorized residents in Kumasi have been arrested prosecuted and
sentenced to various prison terms.
During his two year stay in the region, he
noted, 30 new Police Post, 13 Police Districts and one Division have been
created with plans in place to upgrade the Asawase District to a Division very
soon.
Theses have enhanced police visibility in the region which has also led
to significant reduction in the incidences of highway robberies in the region.
According to DCoP Kofi Boakye, all these
achievements have been possible due to the de-politicization and show of
professionalism in the work of the police.
He commended also the Courts for
dealing with the criminals brought before them in accordance with the law.
The
Regional Police Commander admitted however that, in spite of the successes
chalked so far, there are still the occurrences of some crimes including the
use of taxi cabs by the perpetrators to attack members of the public.
DCoP Kofi
Boakye identified communities such as Atwima Koforidua and Kwanwoma as areas
where some of these crimes are becoming rife.
He commended also the cooperation
of some of the Assembly members and Unit Committees with the Police in dealing
swiftly with some of the criminal activities.
He cautioned members of the
Community Watchdogs not to arrogate to themselves authority and powers they do
not have including wielding of weapons.
Those who use their statuses to extort
monies from suspected criminals and letting such miscreants off the hoot must
also be warned since they themselves will be treated as criminals if they are
caught.
