OSEI WIREDU FARMS WINS 2015 KSI BEST FARMER AWARD

Osei Wiredu Farms run by a 54 year old woman, Mrs. Emelia Osei Wuredu, emerged as the overall best farmer in the Kumasi metropolis at this year’s Farmers’ Day event held at Appiadu in the Ashanti region. 

The Osei Wiredu Farms, located at Atonsu Dompoase, has about 20 thousand live birds in addition to a vegetable and other farms. 

The Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Osei Wiredu, who has been in production for nearly 30 years, received as her prize a mattress, LED television set, two knapsack sprayers, four cutlasses, bars of key soap and a Certificate. 

Twenty-one other individuals, groups and organizations in the agric production chain were also recognized and given various prizes in recognition of their outstanding performances in their respective areas of concentration. 

One such organizations is the GBC’s Ashanti Regional FM, Garden City Radio which received an award as the Best Institution for its weekly programme, ‘Akuafuo Badwa’ which has been running for more than 10 years now and dedicated to the use of agricultural experts and farmers to educate farmers on modern and the best production practices. 

The host of the programme, Azoska Francis Junior, on behalf of the station, took the station’s prizes which included a Certificate, cutlasses and a wall clock.

 The award categories included Best farmers in vegetables production, cassava, plantain, ruminants, poultry, meat processor, farmer-based organization, marketer, agro chemical dealer and Best Agricultural Extension Worker.

Their prizes ranged from mattresses, wellington boots, mixed-blower, knapsack sprayers, agro-chemicals, bicycles, cutlasses and Certificate. 

In an address read for form, the Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Kojo Bonsu noted that agricultural production in the metropolis still suffers from many setbacks such as insecurity in the land tenure system due to the emergence of real estate development that is fast taking over available lands in the metropolis.

 Mr. Kojo Bonsu therefore commended the farmers for remaining determined and committed to their pursuit of food security in the interest of the larger society.
