WHY ASHANTI STUDENTS-REGIONAL MINISTER WONDERS
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Peter
Anarfi-Mensah has expressed serious concern about recent spate of student
agitations in the country with most of them initiated from the Ashanti region.
He mentioned for instance, unrests among teacher trainees in some of the
Colleges of Education.
The Regional Minister warned therefore that government
will not interfere in the legitimate disciplinary procedures of any school
against students who willfully break rules and regulations.
Speaking at a
durbar to climax 75 years of the founding of Osei Tutu Senior High School at
Akropong in the Ashanti region, Mr. Anarfi-Mensah described as unfortunate that
students find it difficult to adhere to rules and regulations within both the
school and larger society.
He condemned students’ indulgence in such anti-social
behaviours like robbery, occultism, rape, indecent dressing and examination
malpractices since such tendencies are impediments to students own wellbeing
and educational development.
Touching on the theme of the anniversary: “75
Years of Quality Boy Child Education; The Role of the Church, the Royalty and
the State”, the Regional Minster disclosed that government has provided a total
of 25 thousand bunker beds and 18 thousand mono-desks for distribution to
senior high schools in the Ashanti region.
The region has as well benefitted
from 10 of the first batch of the community senior high schools, adding that
the construction of these schools are at various stages of completion.
These
are steps being taking by government to make second cycle education easily
accessible.
A Lecturer at the Department of Environmental Science at the Kwame
Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Dr. Philip Antwi Agyei, who is an
old boy of the school, commended the church in particular for its contribution
to the provision of formal education in the country.
He noted with concern
however, that most churches of today have neglected the wellbeing of their
members.
Instead, they are taking away the little income the economically
vulnerable members have.
Dr. Antwi Agyei asked the churches to also contribute
to the welfare of their members by providing scholarship schemes to supplement
what parents provide to their wards education.
Some students were honoured with
monetary and material gifts for their outstanding performances in their
respective endeavours both academically and in extra-curricular activities.
Some current and past staff were presented with gifts and citations for their
hard work and long service.
