GHANA TO REDUCE MALARIA BY 75 % IN FOUR YEARS' TIME
The Acting Manager of the National
Malaria Control Programme, Mrs. Keziah Malm has reiterated governments’
commitment to reduce malaria related deaths by 75 per cent by the year 2020.
According to her, a lot of strategies have been put in place to ensure that
this is achieved.
Mrs. Malm said this at a media briefing organized by the
Ghana Health Service in the Ashanti region on the Long Lasting Insecticide Nets
and other issues on health in the region.
She said since the last quarter of
2014, the Ministry of Health and Ghana Health Service in collaboration with
other development partners have distributed some Long Lasting Insecticide Nets in
the Eastern, Volta, Brong Ahafo and Central regions.
Mrs. Malm noted that since
the free distribution of the nets, malaria related deaths have reduced
drastically.
She said about three million Long Lasting Insecticide Nets are to
be distributed in the Ashanti region.
She however emphasized that the net is
free and every household which registered during the just ended registration
exercise will be given the insecticide net, with two persons entitled to a
net.
Mrs. Malm said collection points
will be created for the distribution and upon producing a coupon given during
the registration exercise.
The Kumasi Metro Director of Health, Dr. Yeboah
Awudzi announced that between January and September this year, out of the 101
deaths recorded for children under five years, 68 of them were malaria-
related.
He commended the media for their watchdog role and urged them to help
in disseminating the free distribution of the Long Lasting Insecticide Nets.
