40-YR DEV'PT. PLAN GEARED TOWARDS GHANA'S CENTENARY CELEBRATION-NDPC
The
National Development Planning Commission has concluded its regional
consultative fora to generate ideas from the public to be factored into the
final 40-year national development plan document.
The Commission will very soon
constitute a technical committee involving the academia, to sift through the
ideas generated for consideration in the final plan.
Later, the Commission will
take written proposals from the three arms of government about their respective
development aspirations for the country.
The Ashanti Regional Representative on
the Commission, Professor Seth Opuni Asiamah made this known in Kumasi at a
day’s youth colloquium to sensitize the youth to the proposed 40-year national
development plan.
The colloquium was organized by Curious Minds, a youth
advocacy group, under the auspices of the National Youth Authority.
It was
attended by young persons drawn from the various youth-oriented institutions
including the Federation of Persons with Disability.
Professor Asiamah, who is
also a lecturer at the KNUST, explained that the main objective for the long
term national development plan is to better position Ghana to make her
centenary celebration in 2057 worthwhile.
According to him, it is envisaged
that by the 100th independence celebrations, the country would have
made very significant progress in her socio-economic development.
Professor
Asiamah noted that the plan will be broken down into four-year medium term strategies,
with specific plans, in line with the tenure of any elected government, to
ensure its eventual attainment.
Additionally, the plan will provide a clear
vision for the nation. Professor Asiamah disclosed that a long term national
development plan is tied to Act 815, which is about the management of the oil
revenue.
He said the plan will favour the youth of today more than the aged
population, hence they must show sustained interest in the plan.
The
Coordinator of Curious Minds, Kingsley Obeng Kyere noted that the recent national
census has proven that young people outnumber the elderly.
Therefore, concerns
and interests of the youth must be integrated into any national development
plan.
