31 FARMERS, FISHERFOLK GRAB PRIZES AT ASHANTI FARMERS' DAY
A total
of 31 individuals and organizations connected with agricultural and fish
production in the Ashanti region will be honoured at this year’s Farmers’ Day
to be held at Tepa in the Ahafo Ano North district on Friday.
The award winners
will receive prizes for the production of specific agric products during the
year under review.
These are roots and tuber, cereals and grains, small
and large ruminants, agro processing, agro inputs dealing, aquaculture
production in addition to the best agric-oriented educational institution and
Extension officer.
Speaking to Ashanti Today
in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional Director of Agriculture, Kwaku Minkah-Fordjour
said the award winners were chosen after a critical consideration of a number of
factors used in their production.
They include the farmer’s adoption of taught
new and improved technologies, environmental conservation and food safety
practices, productivity per unit area and social consciousness in their
respective areas of production.
Mr. Minkah-Fordjour noted that the award
winners will receive prizes ranging from tricycle, refrigerators, spraying
machines to wellington boots.
He noted that National Farmers’ Day celebration
is jointly organized by the Ministries of Food and Agriculture, Fisheries and
Aquaculture Development and that of Local Government and Rural Development with
his sector Ministry being the lead organizer.
The Regional MOFA Director said
even though preparations for the Farmers’ Day celebration in the region has advanced,
the organizers still very much need the assistance of the corporate world either
in cash or in kind to ensure a complete success of the event.
He expressed
gratitude to some private companies for supporting this year’s regional
celebrations with some of the prizes costing huge sums of money.
Meanwhile,
five persons from the Ashanti region who were presented for the National
Farmers’ Day Awards have won in their respective categories.
One of them, an
Agric officer, will receive a prize for his dedication to agricultural
production.
The remaining four prospective award winners emerged winners in cassava,
cocoyam, rice and snail production.
Arrangements are that unlike in the
previous National celebrations, award winners in this year’s National Farmers’
Day will take only their Certificates of recognition and later take their
material prizes in their respective regions where the prizes have already been
sent.
The initiative is to cut down the cost of transporting the prizes to and
from the venue of the National celebration.
