The Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital has successfully launched the first ever population-based Cancer Registry in Ghana christened ‘Kumasi Cancer Registry’.  The project has become possible through a collaboration between the Oncology Directorate of the Hospital and the University of Michigan of the USA and it is now a resource centre for up-to-date data and information on cancer in the country.  The Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, Dr. Joseph Akpaloo made this known at an end of year thanksgiving service and staff get-together in Kumasi.   Dr. Akpaloo announced also that Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is very close to establishing Ghana’s second cardiothoracic surgery centre.  Even before that project becomes a reality, a team of medical experts at the Hospital were able to perform open heart surgeries this year during a visit of a pediatric team from the Boston Children’s Hospital in the USA.  In all, 112 patients benefitted f...

Engineers of the Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG, are working around the clock to detect the cause of a fire outbreak that cause a blast at the company’s Bulk Supply Point at Ridge in Kumasi yesterday.  A team of Engineers of the company from Accra had been called in to augment their colleagues in the Ashanti region to also fix the problem so as to restore power supply to residents within the many customers across the region who have been affected by the emergency situation.  A visit to the Bulk Supply Point concerned at Ridge by our Correspondent showed engineers and other workers seriously working to identify the actual cause of the wild fire as well as restore power supply within the shortest possible time.  Also at the scene of the incident to learn at firsthand what really caused explosion that led to a greater part of the Ashanti region sleeping in darkness last night were officials of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission.  In an i...

Government has so far spent more than seven-point-seven million Ghana Cedis on various water projects aimed at improving access to potable water for the people in the Ashanti region.  The projects include hand dug wells, boreholes and small town water supply systems in various communities.  The Ashanti Regional Minister, Peter Anarfi-Mensah who made this known at the last meeting of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council in Kumasi, assured that water supply and expansion is high on the agenda of the government.  It is for this reason that serious attention is being given to the Kumawu water project popularly known as the ‘3K Water Project’.  The project, on completion, will provide reliable potable water supply to Kumawu and Konongo and their surrounding communities in the Ashanti region as well as the Kwahu North district of the Eastern region.  Touching on sanitation, the Regional Minister disclosed also that government has again spe...

The Kumasi Abattoir Company is building a biogas plant to generate energy for its operations.  The project began last August and is expected to be ready for test run by February before the eventual commissioning by the middle of next year for full operations.  The Managing Director of the Abattoir, Joseph Owusu Boadi has taken selected media practitioners around the project to inspect the progress of work.  According to him, the project is being jointly funded by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, UNIDO, and the Korea government at a cost of more than 120 thousand Ghana Cedis.  On completion, the biogas plant will convert the faecal matter and other waste products of animals at the Abattoir into alternative energy source for operations at the Abattoir.  This will then relieve the management the huge expenditure it incurs on electricity consumption.  The Managing Director noted also that the completion of th...

Management of the Kumasi Abattoir has re-assured the public not to panic about the safety of the meat it produces unto the market.  According to the company, it will not for any reason compromise on the quality and safety of its products meant for public consumption and that the interest of the public remains paramount to its operations.  The Managing Director of the Abattoir, Joseph Owusu Boadi gave assurance after a media tour of the company to bring to the fore, the processes of production.  The Kumasi Abattoir, not only slaughters ruminants such as goats, sheep and cattle as well as pigs, but also processes these into about 20 different animal products like sausage.     The facility is the supplier of about 90 per cent of all locally made meat products and meat for public consumption in Kumasi for which reason any issues bordering the safety and wholesomeness of the meat products from the company becomes a major source of public concern....
