MAMTECH FACES EJECTION-PRINCIPAL

The Asante Mampong Technical College of Education, MAMTECH faces possible closure if the institution fails to pay rent on the land on which it is situated to the Administrator of Stool Lands.

The Administrator threatens court action to retrieve an amount of 31 thousand 150 Ghana Cedis the school owed the Stool Lands Administration since the land was acquired 54 years ago.

The Principal of the College, Reverend Dr. Victor Nyuieko Avotri who disclosed this at the 7th Graduation ceremony of the College, said the Ministry of Education and other relevant authorities have been duly informed to intervene.

According to the Principal, Management of the College is not in any way against the payment of compensation or rent on lands being used for state institutions.

However, the directive for payment of such huge sum of money to a struggling institution such as MAMTECH is indirectly prescribing its shut down.

Rev. Dr. Avotri noted that the delay in transiting the Public Colleges of Education to tertiary status is adversely affecting such institutions a great deal.

He said apart from the staff of the Colleges of Education drawing their salaries from the Ghana Education Service, they still depend on the GES for staffing.

However the Colleges are expected to take instructions from the National Council for Tertiary Education and its allied bodies.

The Principal said the Colleges of Education still have no time table as they depend on the University of Cape Coast for most academic programmes.

The Colleges are also facing stiff competition from the UCC and other private institutions for the training of Diploma in Basic Education teachers.

Rev. Dr Avotri said the solution to these challenges shall be found through the introduction of Transforming Teacher Education and Learning in Ghana Programme by the Government and funded by the UK Department of International Development.

On development projects, the Principal was grateful to the Students Representative Council for upgrading some roads on campus at a cost of 200 Ghana Cedis.

The College is also using internally generated funds to continue some of the abandoned structures started 40 years ago for classrooms and accommodation.

In all, 217 students who had successfully gone through the three years Basic Education Programme had Diploma certificates conferred on them.

One Candidate obtained first Class, 44 Second Class Upper, 70 Second Class Lower and five candidates had Pass.

The First Class candidate, Prince Boateng Agyei was awarded 500 Ghana Cedis as his prize.
