Part of the logistics for the 3rd National Sanitation Day
The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council have jointly presented a quantity of waste collection logistics to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu towards the 3rd National Sanitation Day exercise tomorrow, 3rd January, 2015.

The items included 10 thousand litter bins in addition to shovels, wheelbarrows, brooms and other materials for use by participants of the  of the National Sanitation Day.

The Ashanti region, particularly, the capital Kumasi, will be the nerve centre of the 3rd national exercise as it has been dedicated to the Asantehene in recognition and appreciation for his personal involvement since the programme started in November, last year.

Making the presentation at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, the Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Julius Debrah explained that procurement of the logistics has been possible through the support of certain public and private corporate bodies.

Mr. Debrah stressed that his Ministry is working very hard to promote environmental hygiene across the country.

It is in this regard that this year, the Ministry, in partnership with Fidelity Bank, plans to provide financial assistance to interested private individual landlords and land ladies to build a total of 20 thousand household toilet facilities to stop the practice of open defecation.

This, according to him, can help reduce the incidence of certain hygiene-related diseases. Mr. Debrah was satisfied with the level of public interest in the national sanitation day especially the 3rd edition.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, on his part, thanked Otumfuo Osei Tutu for the interest he has so far shown in the programme such that he actively took part in the maiden edition organized on the first Saturday of November, 2014.

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, commended Mr. Debrah for introducing the National Sanitation Day concept to help address the national problem of waste management.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu deplored the Ghanaian’s bad attitude towards environmental cleanliness saying that it should not have taken the government to organize or advocate a national environmental clean-up campaign.

According to him, it is very imperative for every person to take responsibility for his or her personal health for which reason people must be concerned about their personal and environmental hygiene.

The Asantehene advised the people not to politicize the national sanitation day programme since diseases have no political colour.

It is for this reason and the general interest of the people that he has always been supporting all governments in their efforts to promote the general wellbeing of all Ghanaians.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu on the other hand, advised organizers of the programme to ensure that remnants of the clean-up exercise are not left unattended to since that could defeat the actual purpose of the event.
