TENSION AT KUMAWU AS RIVAL CHIEF IS SWORN IN
Tension is
reported mounting at Kumawu in the Sekyere Kumawu district of Ashanti following
the swearing in of a rival paramount chief for the traditional area at dawn yesterday.
The newly sworn in paramount chief is a 56-year old Telecom Technician
resident in Britain, known in private life as John Kwasi Oduro.
His stool name
is “Barima Tweneboah Kodua The Fifth”.
An eye witness of the swearing in ceremony at Kumawu told Ashanti Today that the new paramount chief was sworn in at 1 am today in the
presence of the Akwamuhene, Sumankwahene, Aduanahene and Akyempemhene of the
Kumawu traditional Council with a fairly large crowd of the citizens. According
to the eye witness, there was no security presence.
The swearing in of Barima
Tweneboah Kodua is seen as the beginning of a serious confusion considering the
fact that about six months ago, the Medical Director of the Saint Michael’s
Catholic Hospital at Pramso in Ashanti, Dr. Emmanuel Sarfo was sworn in and
introduced to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu under the stool name, Barimah Sarfo
Tweneboah Kodua and subsequently introduced to the people of Kumawu.
A resident of Kumawu and another eye witness
later told a Kumasi-based radio station, Hello fm that following the swearing in
of the rival paramount chief, tension started mounting at Kumawu in the morning with
re-inforced Police strength from Effiduase to augment their colleagues at
Kumawu.
However, when contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Ashanti
Regional Police Command, ASP Mohammed Tanko Yusif could neither confirm nor
deny the security situation at Kumawu.
Kumawu is one of the key founding paramountcies of Asanteman after the sacrifice of its chief,Nana Tweneboah Kodua for the fortification and unity of the Asante state in the olden days.
For this reason, any negative development in that traditional area, particularly a rebellion against the Asantehene, could have a serious repercussion for the entirety of Asanteman.
