CHIEFTAINCY THREATENING PEACE IN ASHANTI-PEACE COUNCIL
The Ashanti Regional Peace Council has
noted with concern the chieftaincy disputes in Kumawu and Pakyi Number Two,
which are threatening the peace in those towns and the Region as a whole.
The
Council is therefore appealing to the various factions to exercise restraint
and respect laid down traditional and customary procedures and processes in
resolving the disputes.
A statement issued in Kumasi and signed by the Chairman
of the Regional Peace Council, Professor S.O. Asiamah also appealed to the
youth in both towns not to allow themselves to be used by either of the
factions to disturb the peace.
The Council further appealed to the traditional
leadership in Kumawu and Pakyi Number Two to speed up the process of resolving
the issues at hand as expeditiously as possible, to avert any untoward
consequences.
According to the statement, the cost of peace is inestimable and
so it is important that everybody makes the maintenance of peace their
responsibility.
The Council has also noted with regret the resurgence of a
conflict between Fulani herdsmen and the local farmers.
The statement said the
Council understands the difficulties and challenges that the parties are going
through.
It however acknowledges that building sustainable peace cannot be
achieved forcefully but through dialogue, negotiation, mediation and
understanding of the values of diversity, trust, tolerance, confidence building
and reconciliation.
The Council therefore calls on all parties involved in, or
affected by the current crisis at Asante Akyem Agogo to exercise restraint
while measures are put in place to ensure an amicable resolution of the issue
to build sustainable peace in the area and in the region as a whole.
