FIRE RAVAGES GARAGE NEAR GBC

An outbreak of wildfire at a section of the Dadiesoaba Garage near the main GBC’s regional office in Kumasi this morning has led to the destruction of eight vehicles that had been brought there for repairs.

 Eight private shops belonging to some of the mechanics operating at the garage were also destroyed.

 An eyewitness, Opanin Kwadwo Agyekum told Ashanti Today, that he first saw the fire at about 5 am today. According to him, he first saw a small flame of fire near one of the affected shops and before he could call for help, the entire shop burst into flames and threatening to spread to the adjoining shops and houses.

 Mr. Agyekum said to reduce the eventual impact of the fire, he evacuated two large gas cylinders from the shop to avoid it exploding before calling for the help of nearby residents. 

While the fire was being put out, a distress call was made to the Fire Service for additional help. 

The head of the Fire Service team at the scene of the incident, Sub Fire Officer Emmanuel Agyemang also told Ashanti Today that his team from the Metro Fire Station arrived at the scene at about 6 am and was able to prevent the ravaging fire from spreading to particularly, the nearby houses. 

Sub Fire Officer Agyemang said even though investigation into the actual cause and extent of the damage caused is still underway, the fire could have started from one of the shops that deals with upholstery and welding. 

Those shops contained materials that are highly flammable and combustible. 

The Fireman disclosed that since last month, four garages in the Kumasi metropolis have been destroyed by wild fires. 

He traced the cause of some of the fires to poor and obsolete electrical wiring and flammable objects.
  

Sub Officer Agyemang asked people to be extra careful in handling fire-related materials at this time since the weather is very dry.
