Otumfuo
Osei Tutu, in whose honour the exercise was organized, also took part and has
assured the organizers of his continuous personal participation in all
subsequent editions to ensure its sustainability.
The 3rd National
Sanitation Day was dedicated to the Asantehene, Otumfuo
OseiTutu in
appreciation of his keen interest and personal participation in the first
edition of the exercise last November.

As at 6am today, there were fears that
the exercise would not witness the required participation by the residents
because there were no signs of people coming out as at that time.
However, as
at 8 am when the exercise actually took off, there was a massive turn out. As Ashanti Today went round the city to guage the level of people’s participation,
people were seen cleaning up their vicinities in some of the suburbs especially
at Patasi, Kwadaso, Tafo and other renowned suburbs of the regional capital.
At
the Kejetia Lorry terminal, Adum, Allah Bar and Akwatia Line, the exercise was
heavily patronized by personnel of all the security services, staff and
personnel of the National Service Scheme, staff
of the Zoomlion Company,
members of the Ghana Actors Guild with a popular Nigerian actress, Patience
Ozorkwor in attendance as well as members of the VVIP musical group led by
Reggie Rockstone.
They desilted gutters that had been heavily choked for years
paving the way for free flow of stagnant waters that had been emitting pungent
smell.
For the first time in such a public exercise, the participants were
served with free breakfast that included ‘koko with koose’ while after the
event, the musicians entertain them with free popular music.
The entire
exercise was led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu and supported by the
Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Julius Debrah and the
Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong together with the Kumasi Metropolitan
Chief Executive, Kojo Bonsu.
In a remark after the exercise, Otumfuo Osei Tutu
repeated his unflinching support for any initiative aimed at promoting the
general wellbeing the people.
According to him, as the traditional leader of
Asanteman, he has a responsibility to champion the welfare of his people for
which
reason, he will personally continue to support and participate in
subsequent editions of the National Sanitation Day exercise for its sustenance.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu advised the residents not to shirk their individual
responsibilities to maintain personal and environmental hygiene which are
essential for good health and personal, development.
The Asantehene asked the
organizers to ensure that all the remnants of the clean up exercise are
collected to make the event meaningful adding that he will personally go round
later to find out for himself if the debris had been collected.
The Ashanti
Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong, thanked Otumfuo Osei Tutu profusely for the
show of genuine concern for the general good of his people by taking active
part in the exercise.
The two deputy minister of Local Government and Rural
Development, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye and Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum also took part
in the exercise in separate districts in the Ashanti region.
