MALARIA, UNDISPUTED CHAMPION
Malaria recorded the highest number of
cases among the top 10 causes of admissions in health facilities in the
Bosomtwe District of Ashanti in 2014.
Over two thousand 500 patients confirmed
as having Malaria were admitted in the year under review.
This was followed by
pregnancy and related complications with 586 cases. Hernia, hypertension, chest
infection and anaemia were also among the top causes of admissions.
The District
Director of Health Services, Joseph Adomako announced this at the District’s
Annual Health Review for 2014 at Kokoado near Kuntanase.
He said malaria also
recorded of over 50 per cent of the top 10 causes of OPD attendance at health
facilities in the district.
Mr. Adomako said the district recorded 202 new HIV
cases last year. This however was a reduction of 37 new cases of the 2013
figure of 239.
Interestingly, pregnant women attending antenatal clinic last
year opted for HIV testing of which 34 tested positive.
Mr. Adomako also
announced a key achievement for the district in the area of teenage pregnancy.
He said 448 cases of teenage pregnancies were recorded last year as against 679
cases in 2013.
Total number of under five years deaths due to malaria last year
was two, a reduction of one case from 2013.
Mr. Adomako mentioned staff
placement difficulties, inadequate accommodation for staff and inadequate
equipment for outreach services as some of the challenges encountered by the
District Health Directorate.
He said monitoring and supervision and disease
surveillance will be strengthened this year.
The Directorate will also source
for support from the District Assembly and other NGOs for medical equipment and
furniture.
