Samuel Tettey, Director of Elections of Ghana's EC
The Electoral Commission, EC has disqualified one of the candidates contesting for the Maakro electoral area in the Kumasi Metropolis in the upcoming District Level Election.

The candidate, whose identity is yet to be made known, was caught dabbling in party politics, contrary to provisions in Act 473, the law that regulates the conduct of District Level elections in Ghana.

The Director of Elections of the EC, Samuel Tettey, made this known at a day’s capacity training workshop for selected media practitioners in the Ashanti region empower them with the laws governing the

conduct of the elections scheduled for early March.

Mr. Tettey said, the candidate “had mounted a campaign billboard that displayed his membership Card, symbol and presidential candidate of the NPP”.

According to the Elections Director, a formal complaint was made to the EC about the conduct of the candidate that caused an investigation.

He said “when the man was invited as part of the investigation, he admitted the offence but claimed that it was campaign billboard was mounted by his supporters” and promised to remove it.

However, he had already contravened the law for which reason, he has been disqualified.

The law forbids people contesting in either the District Assemblies or Unit Committee’s elections from using anything that connects the candidates to a political party or receive any form of support from such entities.

Mr. Tettey entreated any individual, group of persons of entities wishing to support any candidate to channel the support through the EC, in line with the law.

More than three thousand persons have successfully filed their nominations to contest in the District Assemblies elections in the Ashanti region in the March 2015 elections.
Only one thousand and 58 Electoral Areas are being contested with about 32 of them to have no elections conducted there.

This is because those areas have only candidate each who filed their nominations at the close of nominations.
