OVER THREE THOUSAND FILE TO CONTEST D/A ELECTIONS I N ASHANTI
A total of three thousand, 686 persons have
filed their nominations to contest in the upcoming District Assemblies
Elections in the Ashanti Region scheduled for March this year.
There are one
thousand and 58 electoral areas in the region. The Deputy Ashanti Regional
Director of the Electoral Commission, Lawrence Sarpong who made this known to Ashanti Today in Kumasi, disclosed also that the candidates involve three
thousand, 501 men and 185 women.
According to Mr. Sarpong, 32 of the electoral areas
have only one candidate each with no electoral area left without a candidate
after close of nominations.
He said the Kumasi Metropolis with 92 electoral areas
has the highest number of candidates of 368 followed by the Amansie West
district where 212 including eight women have filed to contest for the Assembly
Member positions.
Sekyere Afram Plains district and Asokore Mampong
Municipality have the least number of candidates of 42 and 47 candidates
respectively.
The Asem Electoral Area in the Kumasi metropolis has the highest
number of candidates of nine.
For the Unit Committee elections, the Deputy
Regional EC Director disclosed that for the one thousand and 58 Units up for
contest, a total of eight thousand, 187 persons have filed to contest.
These
involve seven thousand, 436 men and 751 women.
Twelve of the Units did not have
any nomination after the close of nominations with a significant number of the
Units having less than the five persons minimum number of candidates for the
election.
In those Units, Mr. Sarpong hinted that the Electoral Commission
could re-open the nomination for interested qualified persons to apply.
On its
calendar towards of the Local Level Elections, Mr. Sarpong said the EC is on
course with its preparations towards the exercise, saying that the next
programme on the calendar is for the EC to provide the Notice of Poll to
publicize the persons contesting for each of the Electoral Areas and the Units
in the region with arrangement to organize platforms in each of the Electoral
Areas for the candidates to interact with their electorate.
Mr. Sarpong said
also that the regional directorate of the EC has already started recruitment of
the required personnel to conduct the elections.
Their training is scheduled
from the 18th of this month to the 1st of March.
