A ceremony has
been performed at the Ashanti Regional Police Training School at Patasi in
Kumasi for work to start on the actual construction of a 40-bed Police Clinic.
The project which has been scheduled for completion in six months, is budgeted to
cost one-point-eight million Ghana Cedis and is expected to be funded through
donations by philanthropic individuals and corporate bodies. Aalready, the
Regional Police Command has received 181 thousand Ghana Cedis in donation by
members of the public and corporate entities towards the project.
The amount is
part of the 260 thousand Ghana Cedis pledged by individuals and companies
during the inauguration of the 200-seater Police Conference Hall in Kumasi
about two months ago.
In an address, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel
Sarpong, who is also the Chairman of the Regional Security Council, emphasized
the maxim that `the health of a nation is the wealth of that nation’.
It is in
view of this that all over the world, countries continue to make substantial
investment in the provision of healthcare facilities in a bid to ensure
affordable and accessible healthcare for the citizenry.
Mr. Sarpong said it is
an undeniable fact that the Ghana Police Service plays a critical role in the
maintenance of law and order in the society that is required for the people to
go about their routine lawful duties for socio-economic development.

The
Regional Minister said also that government has improved the conditions of the
Ghana Police Service by providing some of their crucial logistical needs to work
efficiently.
He noted however, that once government cannot meet all the needs,
there is the need for a cordial public-private working partnership to address
some of the operational challenges that are undermining optimal performance of
the security service provider.
It is in this regard that Mr. Sarpong commended
the private sector in the Ashanti region for the goodwill shown in their
contribution towards the construction of the Police Conference Hall and the
Clinic.
He commended also the Regional Police Command, particularly its
Commander, DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye, for the proactive and inspirational leadership
provided since the last 10 months.
The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Kofi
Boakye, explained that apart from raising the standard of the current clinic,
the new clinic on completion will befit the status of the Ashanti regional
police command, reduce the medical bills expended on police personnel and
suspects as well as ensure adequate security for suspects who will be seeking
medical care.
DCOP Kofi Boakye said already, residential accommodation for the
nurses and medical doctors has been secured.
The Architect of the project whose
services have been free of charge, Jimmy Nkrumah said the Clinic will have
