ONE PERSON KILLED IN AMANSIE WEST RIOT
The Amansie West District Chief Executive,
Alex Bonsu has confirmed to Ashanti Today
the death of a man during a riot yesterday morning.
The deceased, who is yet to
be identified by security officials, was allegedly killed by a Police officer during
a riot by members of one of the communities in the district.
The Police have
taken over the body of the man to the mortuary pending investigations into
circumstances surrounding the matter.
The DCE alleged that the mayhem resulted
from a confusion which came about when the Police attempted to clear a road blockade
mounted by the residents.
Speaking in an interview, the DCE said the riot was
ostensibly orchestrated by some aggrieved residents of the Manso Nkran township
at about 9am yesterday, Tuesday September 15, over a misunderstanding regarding a resettlement of
the community by a new mining company in the district, AsankoGold Limited.
Mr.
Bonsu explained that the riot broke out at a time he and some of the key
stakeholders in the district were helping the mining company to inaugurate the
88 apartment resettlement at Manso Nkran and that when he arrived at the scene,
matters had gotten worse and therefore had to escape from a possible attack by
the rioters.
The DCE has confirmed also the killing of another person at
Datano, also in the Amansie West district but could not give any details of the
cause of the death.
Mr. Bonsu said the District Security Committee, DISEC is
having an emergency meeting to deliberate on security situation in the district
and also to devise means of restoring peace and order.
