NDC POSTPONES VETTING IN ASHANTI
The National
Democratic Congress’ vetting of its Parliamentary primary aspirants in the Ashanti
region has been rescheduled from tomorrow to next week Tuesday, the 29th
of this month at a central location in Kumasi.
The Ashanti Regional
Communication Officer of the party, Samed Akalilu, told Ashanti Today that the
Constituency executives and aspirants have been formally informed of the change
in the decision to enable them to prepare accordingly.
In all, 106 members have
filed their papers to contest in the primaries in all the 47 Constituencies.
The number includes 12 women, two former and current Ministers of State, two
Deputy Ministers as well as the four incumbent MPs.
Twelve of the aspirants are
contesting unopposed, with the Asante Akyem Central Constituency presenting the
highest number of candidates of five.
Six constituencies are presenting four
candidates each. All the four MPs of the party in the region are being
contested.
Meanwhile, one of the three aspirants in the Nhyiaeso Constituency
in Kumasi, Yaw Ntem Afriyie, has expressed optimism that he will emerge the
winner in the contest, regardless of the caliber of the other parliamentary aspirants
for the constituency.
They include the Managing Director of the State Housing
Company, Dr. Samuel Sarpong who is also a former Ashanti Regional Minister.
According to Mr. Afriyie, he is well known by the rank and file of the party in
the constituency, following his long standing cordial relationship and
dedication to the works of the party not only in Kumasi, but also in the United
Kingdom where he currently resides.
He urged his opponents to undertake their
campaign devoid of mudslinging or character assassination since the contest is
an internal competition.
