GOVERNMENTS FAILED PRIVATE SECTOR-EX-PREZ KUFUORF

Former President John Agyekum Kufour says effective support towards a sustainable growth of the private sector remains one key measure through which the country’s economic fortunes can change for the better.

According to him, the private sector is the engine of growth and should therefore be supported by government with pragmatic policies and programmes which will in turn increase the country’s foreign exchange earnings through increased investments.

Former President Kufour made these remarks at the national conference of the Ghana Bar Association in Kumasi.

He explained further that, most small and medium enterprises have the requisite skills and capacities to add value to the country’s abundant natural resources.

The challenge he emphasized, has been failure on the part of successive governments to actualize the usual rhetoric of supporting the private sector.

President Kufour therefore urged present and successive governments to provide incentives to step up private sector competitiveness and create more jobs through wealth generation, while strengthening the local currency and reducing importation of basic consumables.
