INVESTIGATION INTO SCANDAL WILL BE COMPREHENSIVE-CHIEF JUSTICE
The Chief Justice, Mrs. Georgina
Theodora Wood has restated the resolve of the Judicial Council to carry out
comprehensive investigations into the alleged acts of corruption and gross
misconduct by some Judges and other judicial staff which has in the past few
weeks gained local and global attention.
She has charged members of the Ghana
Bar Association and the entire legal fraternity to discharge their duties
professionally and ethically without fear or favor.
According to the Chief
Justice the Judicial Service will not shield any member who will engage in selfishness,
or engage in corrupt and other questionable practices.
Mrs. Theodora Wood made
the remarks at the opening of the 2015/2016 Annual National Conference of the
Ghana Bar Association, in Kumasi today, Monday September 14.
The Chief Justice noted that, the need for the
Judicial Service to take stock of the issues and challenges that have bedeviled
it over the years cannot be overemphasized, considering the continuous the negative
outlook it is portraying.
She stressed
that without the rule of law, the desire to build a prosperous nation for
current and future generations through sustainable development cannot be
realized, as the latter is at the crux of the protection of the fundamental
human rights of citizens as well as national social and economic development.
To this end, she admonished civil society organizations, the media and the
entire legal fraternity to contribute to efforts to deliver and increase access
to equitable adjudication.
Speaking on the theme for the conference, former
President John Agyekum Kuffour observed that public confidence in the country’s
judiciary keeps dwindling, which according to him negatively affects the
country’s democracy and overall progress.
He therefore tasked the General Legal
Council to prune the legal body off corrupt professionals who do not have the
interest of the nation at heart in order to win back public trust.
Among the
topics for discussion for the conference include the right to fair trial,
saving the public purse and delay in the delivery of justice.
Also at the Conference was the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu.
