ECG PRE-PAID CREDIT TO GO MOBILE SOON

Mr. Ebenezer Baiden of ECG
The Electricity Company of Ghana, ECG, plans to make pre-paid credit for its metres readily available in the near future.

If the plan becomes operational, customers of the ECG using pre-paid metres will be able to access the credit at retail shops and from roving venders just like the mobile telecommunication companies are currently doing with their credit cards.

This was made known at a forum in Kumasi by the officer in charge of Tariffs at the ECG, Ebenezer Baiden.

If this plan becomes operational, the numerous customers of the company will be spared the perennial trouble of traveling long distances and the loss of man hours in queues to purchase pre-paid electricity credit.

Touching on other issues regarding the operations of ECG, Mr. Baiden disclosed that the company has already spent 41 million Ghana Cedis to procured 10 life line vehicles in all of its operational regions for repair works.

He disclosed also that about 400 thousand people are connected to the national grid annually, something that adds more pressure on the system.

He said the company has spent so much money to expand and improve on the quality of its services to customers.

To continue to do more for the people, Mr. Baiden noted that the present tariff being charged for a unit of electric power is woefully inadequate to enable the company to expand its operations.

It is for this reason that the ECG and its sister-companies are jointly asking for an upward adjustment of the current tariff from 44 Pesewas to one Ghana Cedi.

He said despite the tariff increases, electricity is far cheaper than alternative sources of power and therefore appealed to the people to accept the tariff adjustment proposals.
