KNUST PHARMACEUTICAL STUDENTS CREATE AWARENESS ON SAFE DRUG USE
The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science
and Technology branch of the Pharmaceutical Students Association of Ghana has undertaken
Drug Safety and Health Awareness Campaign in three farming communities in the
Amansie West district of Ashanti.
The communities are Antoakrom, Manso Nkwanta
and Manso Abore.
It was part of activities marking its Faculty week celebration
under the theme, “A Healthy Nation, A Wealthy Nation; The Role of Pharmacists”.
The students educated the communities about the usage and effects of drugs.
They also provided free health screening and supplied medicine freely to those who
were diagnosed of various ailments.
The leadership as part of the celebration
also presented items worth 600 Ghana Cedis to the Male Ward of the Saint Martin’s
Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum also in the Amansie West District.
The items included bags of rice, toilet roll,
bandages, detergents and gauze.
In an
interview, the President of the Association, Amos Atsu expressed satisfaction
with the exercise and reiterated the commitment of members to the vision of the
association by embarking on yearly activities to create awareness and organize seminars
on drug usage.
He said this year’s
community outreach targeted about one thousand people for the screening but exceeded
the number.
The General Secretary for the Association, Madam Shakira Aziz
Salemi expressed concern about drugs administration in Ghana, of which many are
not dispensed by qualified pharmacists.
She advised people to be cautious about
the use of drugs to avoid any health complication.
