KNUST PHARMACEUTICAL STUDENTS CREATE AWARENESS ON SAFE DRUG USE

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology branch of the Pharmaceutical Students Association of Ghana has undertaken Drug Safety and Health Awareness Campaign in three farming communities in the Amansie West district of Ashanti.

The communities are Antoakrom, Manso Nkwanta and Manso Abore.

It was part of activities marking its Faculty week celebration under the theme, “A Healthy Nation, A Wealthy Nation; The Role of Pharmacists”.

The students educated the communities about the usage and effects of drugs.

They also provided free health screening and supplied medicine freely to those who were diagnosed of various ailments.

The leadership as part of the celebration also presented items worth 600 Ghana Cedis to the Male Ward of the Saint Martin’s Catholic Hospital at Agroyesum also in the Amansie West District.

The items included bags of rice, toilet roll, bandages, detergents and gauze.

In an interview, the President of the Association, Amos Atsu expressed satisfaction with the exercise and reiterated the commitment of members to the vision of the association by embarking on yearly activities to create awareness and organize seminars on drug usage.

He said this year’s community outreach targeted about one thousand people for the screening but exceeded the number.

The General Secretary for the Association, Madam Shakira Aziz Salemi expressed concern about drugs administration in Ghana, of which many are not dispensed by qualified pharmacists.

She advised people to be cautious about the use of drugs to avoid any health complication.
