UNITED FRONT PARTY GOES TO CONGRESS IN KUMASI
The United Front
Party, UFP is holding its 2nd National Delegates Congress this
Saturday, February 14 at the Jubilee Park in Kumasi.
Five hundred delegates
nationwide except the Brong Ahafo region which is yet to elect its officers,
are expected to attend the congress.
The event will elect national executive
officers including its flagbearer. Positions to be contested for are the
National Chairman, first, second and third Vice Chairmen, General Secretary,
Organizer, Women Organizer, and Treasurer.
The elections are expected to be
supervised by the Electoral Commission. Unconfirmed reports indicate that the
2012 Presidential Candidate of the party, Akwasi Addae Odike is the only
candidate to contest for the flagbearer slot.
The General Secretary, Samuel
Bekoe Owusu in an interview said, all is set for the elections.
He said the
party has satisfied all requirements including the holding of district and
regional delegates’ congresses apart from the Brong Ahafo Region, which will
have its turn after the national delegates congress.
Mr. Bekoe Owusu who wants to contest the
National Chairmanship position said the police have been informed to provide
adequate security.
He denied reports that there is a faction in the party that
is seeking a court injunction to stop the congress.
Mr. Bekoe Owusu said the
former Chairman of the Party Nana Agyenim Boateng has been expelled from the
party for breaking the party’s constitution and therefore has no power to go to
court to stop the congress.
The aspiring National Chairman however said the
Party will respect any court order restraining the congress if they are served
with the notice.
When contacted, Nana Agyenim Boateng maintained that he had
gone to court to restrain the party from holding the congress.
According to him,
the party had not gone through elections at the district and regional levels
and it is therefore strange for any group of persons to hold national delegates
congress to elect officers including a flagbearer.
