CPP CHASTIZES NPP OVER DEMONSTRATION
The
Ashanti Regional Secretary of the Convention People’s Party, CPP, Daniel Essien
says the NPP has no good justification to have organized yesterday’s
demonstration against the country’s power crisis.
According to him, such an
action would have rather been better taken by any of the other opposition
parties that are yet to assume political leadership of the country to also
implement their alternative policies.
The CPP’s Regional Secretary noted that
if the NPP’s government had done enough in power generation during its eight
year rule, the current crisis would have been minimal.
He recalled alleged
attempts made by some opposition elements to stop the construction of the
Akosombo Hydro-electric dam by the Kwame Nkrumah-led government for the sake of
partisan politics.
Incidentally, the dam has for many years remained the main
source of reliable power supply for the economy till now.
Speaking on Garden City
Radio’s Super Morning Flight in Kumasi, Mr. Essien noted that the NPP’s street
demonstration was only to take advantage of the problem to achieve political
points.
A renowned Kumasi-based media practitioner, Kwadwo Marfo agreed with
the NPP that it is not mandatory for it to suggest alternative solutions to the
government especially when it is also seeking political power.
Also, it is the
demonstration offered the NPP the opportunity to prove to all that it is a
united party ready to take over power.
Mr. Marfo however blamed the current of
state of power supply to the failure of successive governments to make the
required investment into power generation to augment the hydro electric dam at
Akosombo while the ECG, GridCo and VRA have been refused several requests for
consumers to pay realistic tariffs to improve on their systems and operations.
On the demonstration by some traders against the Kejetia Lorry Terminal
redevelopment project last Tuesday, the CPP Regional Secretary advised the
Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly to properly engage the traders to be affected by
the project and guarantee them proper resettlement plans that will enable them
to continue with their business activities.
Mr. Essien noted that even though
the Kejetia and Central Markets need comprehensive redevelopment to befit the
status of Kumasi, that should not be an
excuse for the city authorities to forcibly throw the traders out of their
legitimate business.
