ASHANTI MPs PLEDGE UNFLICHING SUPPORT FOR KEJETIA REDEVELOPMENT

The
Chairperson of the Caucus and MP for Oforikrom, Madam Elizabeth Agyemang made
the declaration in Kumasi at a dialogue session between the Kumasi Metropolitan
Assembly and key stakeholders of the proposed redevelopment project.
At the
meeting were seven out of the 10 MPs in the Kumasi metropolis who also pledged
their support for the project aimed at face-lifting the status of the once
Garden City of West Africa to its former glory.
Madam Agyemang explained that as MPs
representing the interest of residents of the region, they have a
responsibility to prioritize socio-economic development of the region for the
improved wellbeing of its residents.
According to her, the proposed Kumasi
Central Market is one major project whose completion can transform the city.

All the other six MPs who were also at the meeting in pledging their support for the project, took turns to advise the KMA to sign Memorandum of Understanding with the affected traders to legalize the claim that they would be given the first option for occupation of the facility on completion.
The MPs again asked the KMA to give priority attention to the redevelopment of
the satellite markets such as the New Tafo Market considered as the second
biggest marketing centre in Kumasi.

Sarpong disclosed that the Kumasi Central Market redevelopment project was
initiated 14 years ago to upgrade the facility into a modern marketing centre
that could
effectively address some of the recurring problems such as the perennial wildfires.

According to him, funds for the project has already being secured
and that the project is a must-do one for the benefit of all.
A Deputy Minister
for Local Government and Rural Development, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum gave the
assurance that on completion of the entire redevelopment project, about 32
thousand spaces to accommodate traders would have been created to enhance
trading activities there.
The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Kojo Bonsu
announced that transport unions operating from the Kejetia Lorry Terminal are
being re-located, temporarily, to the erstwhile Race Course, the Afua Kobi
Market and Sofo Line, while the Royal Market and Acheamfuor Trading Centres
have been secured to resettle the traders at the terminal at no cost for two
and a half years.
