The Ashanti Caucus in Parliament has openly declared its unflinching support for the implementation of the Kumasi Central Market redevelopment project.

The Chairperson of the Caucus and MP for Oforikrom, Madam Elizabeth Agyemang made the declaration in Kumasi at a dialogue session between the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly and key stakeholders of the proposed redevelopment project.

At the meeting were seven out of the 10 MPs in the Kumasi metropolis who also pledged their support for the project aimed at face-lifting the status of the once Garden City of West Africa to its former glory.

Madam Agyemang explained that as MPs representing the interest of residents of the region, they have a responsibility to prioritize socio-economic development of the region for the improved wellbeing of its residents.

According to her, the proposed Kumasi Central Market is one major project whose completion can transform the city.

The residents, especially traders to be affected by the implementation of the project must cooperate with the KMA for the success of the project.

Madam Agyemang however asked the KMA to convince the traders being ejected to make way for the project implementation, that they will regain their places of doing business upon its completion.

All the other six MPs who were also at the meeting in pledging their support for the project, took turns to advise the KMA to sign Memorandum of Understanding with the affected traders to legalize the claim that they would be given the first option for occupation of the facility on completion.
The KMA must also ensure that a proper resettlement plan is place before asking the traders and transport operators to leave Kejetia, which is the first phase of the project.

The MPs again asked the KMA to give priority attention to the redevelopment of the satellite markets such as the New Tafo Market considered as the second biggest marketing centre in Kumasi.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Samuel Sarpong disclosed that the Kumasi Central Market redevelopment project was initiated 14 years ago to upgrade the facility into a modern marketing centre that could

effectively address some of the recurring problems such as the perennial wildfires.

According to him, funds for the project has already being secured and that the project is a must-do one for the benefit of all.

A Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum gave the assurance that on completion of the entire redevelopment project, about 32 thousand spaces to accommodate traders would have been created to enhance trading activities there.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Kojo Bonsu announced that transport unions operating from the Kejetia Lorry Terminal are being re-located, temporarily, to the erstwhile Race Course, the Afua Kobi Market and Sofo Line, while the Royal Market and Acheamfuor Trading Centres have been secured to resettle the traders at the terminal at no cost for two and a half years.
