NEW SEED YAMS FOR FAMERS IN GHANA
The
project aims at addressing challenges facing farmers in accessing quality yam
seed and is funded by Bill and Berlinda Gate Foundation at a cost of four
million dollars.
The Crops Research Institute of the CSIR at Fumesua is
implementing the project for three years.
The Director of the CRI who is also
the Regional Project Coordinator, Dr. Stella Ennin said the main purpose of the
project is to increase food security and wealth creation among farmers.
It is
being implemented in Ghana, Nigeria and Uganda. She explained that the project
has five components and is expected to benefit about three thousand small
holder farmers in eight major yam growing areas in Ghana and Nigeria.
The
Regional Project Coordinator noted that the partnership intervention is vital
to raise the level of seed yam production in Nigeria which is the leading
producer of yam, with Ghana being the leading exporter of the crop in the
world.
She mentioned poor quality of available seed yam, bacterial infection
and tuber rots as a major contribution to poor seed quality and yield reduction
in yam.
Dr. Ennin used the opportunity to appeal to the government to provide
more funding for research into crops.
The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Samuel
Sarpong indicated that government will provide support to the project which
plays a vital role in the socio-economic development of the country.
