LOVE AND CARE TO THE SICK MUST BE A PRIORITY-POPE FRANCIS
Show care and love towards the Sick |
Pope Francis has called on Christians
particularly Catholic faithful to consider as absolute priority, the genuine
care for the sick. He said the sick are in need of constant care, no matter how
protracted their illnesses may be.
However, people should be willing to spend
time with the sick and let them feel more loved and comforted. Pope Francis
made the call in a message for the celebration of the 23rd World Day
of the Sick.
The observance of the Ashanti Region celebration of the event took
place at the Saint Michael’s Hospital at Pramso in the Bosomtwe District on the
theme, “I Was Eyes To The Blind And Feet To The Lame”.
The occasion, held
annually globally by the Catholic, is to honour those who have been plagued by
various diseases and therefore need the care, sympathy, patience, support and
prayers for God to have compassion on them and to grant them total healing.
Pope
Francis’ message which was delivered by the Catholic Bishop of Obuasi, Most
Reverend John Yaw Afoakwa, said it is time Christians show not only by their
words, but also by their lives that they genuinely care for the sick.
They
should consider care for the sick as fulfilling a key commandment of God in the
Bible.
The Executive Secretary of the Obuasi Diocesan Health Secretariat,
Reverend Sister Mary Owusu Frimpong commended successive governments for their
policies and support towards improving healthcare delivery.
She noted that
through their intervention and by their various training and distribution
policies, availability of technical staff in Catholic health institutions has
improved significantly.
Rev. Sister Owusu Frimpong said accreditation has been
secured for internship training of physician Assistants, both medical and
anaesthesia.
Again accreditation is being sought to begin the Diploma Midwifery
programme soon.
The Acting Medical
Director at the Saint Michael’s Hospital, Dr. Samuel Yaw Adu mentioned delays
in payment of NHIS claims as among the major concerns of the facility.
He said
suppliers are not ready to add to the already huge outstanding bills the
hospital owes them.
This notwithstanding, the facility is doing its best to
serve its clients.
