UBaSSA GAMES OPENS AT PAA JOE PARK
The third edition of the University
Basic Schools Sports Association Games has opened in Kumasi.
Christened,
“UBaSSA Games”, the three day programme is on the theme, “Developing Sports
Talents For Ghana – Three Years On”.
Contingents from the Universities of
Ghana, Cape Coast, Mines and Technology and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science
and Technology are competing in soccer and various track and field events.
Speaking at the formal opening ceremony, the Kumasi Metropolitan Director of
Education, Alexander Attah-Asante said the identification, development and
nurturing of young sports athletes is an important factor in enhancing nation
building and national cohesion.
He said more attention should be paid to the
humanistic aspects of sports in national development.
According to Mr.
Attah-Asante, the development of sports talents must be look from the point of
view of a broad spectrum primarily focusing on sports as a means to achieving
health standards.
He noted that most countries do not give credence to sports.
However,
if every citizen were healthy and performing at optimal capacity, there would
be much production and hence a vibrant economy.
In this regard, investment in
sports affiliate championships such as the BaSSA Games holds the key in the
efforts of achieving sustenance in national sports development.
In an address
read for him, the Vice Chancellor of the KNUST, Professor Otoo Ellis said every pupil has a talent and the success
of public universities depends on how they are able to harness the talent of
every pupil un the university basic schools.
The Chairman of the Local
Organizing Committee, Napoleon deGraft-Etison said the UBaSSA Games is only
three years old and it continues in its effort to provide opportunity for the
youth in the university basic schools to develop talents in sports performances.
In the opening match, KNUST JHS boys drew one-one with the University of Mines
and Technology JHS, while in the one thousand 500 Medley opening race,
University of Cape Coast placed first.
