NINE PERSONS CONFIRMED DEAD IN SUSPECTED STAMPEDE AT ASAWASE


Nine persons have been confirmed dead at the Manhyia Government Hospital in Kumasi following an alleged stampede that occurred at the Asawase Community Centre in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of Ashanti last night. 

The dead, made up of six women and three men, were among a large number of mainly the Muslims Community who had patronized a night jam organized by a local event organization, Dankasa Entertainments at the Community Centre yesterday, Wednesday July 6, as part of the Eid-ul Fitr festival. 

Six others who sustained injuries are still on admission at the same hospital and are responding to medical treatment. Our Correspondent reports that a large number of parents, leaders of the Muslim and Zongo communities, sympathizers among others have thronged the premises of the hospital.

 Some of them said the were there to find out whether or not their relatives are among either the injured or dead, claiming that some of their family members who went out yesterday had still not reported to the house as at this morning. 

The Police have taken over investigation into the incident.

 The Asokore Mampong Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Nurudeen Hamidan has visited the injured and also commiserated with the bereaved families. 

He told the media that the Municipal Security Council will convene an emergency meeting at 2 pm today, Thursday July 7 to consider the matter and conduct full scale investigation to unravel all the circumstances surrounding the incident.
