WHO TAKES OVER FROM KOFI ASAMOAH NEXT MONTH?
The Ghana Trades Union Congress, GTUC, is scheduled
to have its Congress in Kumasi next month to evaluate its activities in the
last four years and also strategize for the next four years.
One of the major
items on the Congress’ agenda will be the election of new management including
the next Secretary General of Ghana’s largest labour movement.
The current
Secretary General of the GTUC, Kofi Asamoah who has successfully completed two terms
of eight years, may not be seeking another term.
Even though, there is no hard
and fast rule about how long a person must serve as the Secretary General of
the Congress, its convention has been holders of that enviable position last
for a maximum of eight years of four-year electable tenure.
Inquisitions made by Ashanti Today
from insiders of the GTUC indicate that the current Deputy Secretary General,
Dr. Yaw Baah could likely take over.
Bro. Kofi Asamoah took over from Akwasi
Adu Amankwaa in 2008 after serving as the Deputy Secretary General.
Dr. Yaw
Baah is now seen together with Bro. Kofi Asamoah at most Conferences of GTUC affiliate
unions in the Ashanti regional capital.
Bro. Kofi Asamoah has also been
speaking about continuity in the leadership of trade unions at these
Conferences.
However, the General Secretary of the Public Services Workers
Union, Ampaaben told Ashanti Today that nominations have not yet been opened
for interested persons to contest for any of the positions.
This will be done
before the Congress but he assured that the Delegates will choose a competent
management team to lead the labour movement to fight for the rights of Ghanaian
workers.
