STOP ENDORSING POLITICIANS-NHC WARNS
The President of the National House of Chiefs, Naa Professor John Nabila has called on traditional rulers to desist from openly giving their backing to political parties or any candidate of a political party ahead of the December 7 elections.
He observed that of late,
certain chiefs openly endorse candidates of one political party or the other.
Naa Prof. Nabila emphasized that it is not the position of the National House
of Chiefs to endorse political parties.
He has therefore appealed to all chiefs
to put an end to such endorsement.
Naa Prof. Nabila was addressing the second
general meeting of the House in Kumasi.
He noted that as traditional rulers, it
is the wish of Nananom that the forthcoming elections are conducted in a
peaceful atmosphere.
Naa Prof. Nabila called on all Ghanaians to ensure that
absolute peace is maintained before, during and after the elections.
He further
called on the leadership of all political parties and their candidates not to
attack the person of their opponents during their campaigns but talk about what
they can do to improve the living standards of the people when voted into
power.
Naa Prof. Nabila noted with concern that with the political campaigns
heating up, it appears that insults, threats to peace and name calling are
becoming rampant.
According to him, everything possible must be done by
Ghanaians and stakeholders in the electoral process to ensure that the gains
the country has achieved in the areas of democracy, good governance, peace and
stability are sustained.
The Minister for Chieftaincy and Culture, Dr. Henry
Seidu Danaa, called on members of the National House of Chiefs to promote and protect
the dignity of the chieftaincy institution.
He reminded the House that the
National Constitution debars chiefs from taking part in active partisan
politics.
Dr. Danaa said even though traditional authorities should welcome all
political parties including their candidates to their palaces, they should try
to refrain from making statements that will indicate their choice of a
particular political party or candidate to the public.
