INVOLVE UEW IN EDUCATIONAL REFORMS-VC AVOKE

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Education Winneba, Professor Mawutor Avoke has appealed to the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education to involve the university when the need arises for the modification of their academic calendar so that many more of their staff can enroll on its sandwich programmes to improve their teaching skills.

He said being a partner of teacher development, the university is mindful not to take teachers out of the classrooms to create teacher absenteeism.

For this reason, the sandwich programme has been designed such that people could develop themselves professionally while working.

Prof Avoke made the appeal at the matriculation ceremony for its 2016/2017 academic year sandwich students who will be pursuing post-graduate and undergraduate programmes at its two colleges in the Ashanti Region, the College of Agriculture Education at Mampong and the College of Technology Education in Kumasi.

The College of Agriculture Education at Asante Mampong 263 students made up of 151 males and 112 females matriculated.

At the College of Technology Education in Kumasi, a total of 902 students were offered admission to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Prof. Avoke said the emerging global trend of acquiring teaching competence through the sandwich training programme has become a viable option for solving the problem of teacher quality and quantity.

He said the sandwich programme has helped to enhance access for those seeking admissions into universities and the large number of students admitted for each contact period is a testimony for its importance.

For this reason, the university continues to attach great importance to its sandwich programmes.

Prof. Avoke noted that since it is targeted at the Ghana Education staff or people who want to join the GES, the sandwich programme has been designed so as not to distract the GES calendar.

He said even though the university faces challenges of heightened expectations and declining financial resources, it would collaborate with the communities which they serve, to enable the institution to be a place where people would want to work and study.
