RESCUE OPERATIONS, FIREFIGHTING NOT COMMERCIAL-GNFS

The Ghana National Fire Service says fire fighting and rescue operations by the Service are not commercial.

It has therefore asked people affected by fire outbreaks or other emergency cases to report to any staff of the Service who demand money after helping to put out the fire or perform any rescue operation for them for a punitive action to be taken by the management.

Station Officer Isaac Nemi of the Fire Education Unit of the Ashanti Regional GNFS Headquarters gave the advice during a fire safety education for members of the Asokwa Church of Christ in Kumasi.

He took the church through the statutory mandate of the GNFS, the causes, effects and preventive measures against fire outbreaks.

Mr. Nemi expressed serious concerns about recent cases of domestic fire outbreaks in the Ashanti region which have resulted in the death of many people.

He blamed most domestic and workplace wildfires on poor, illegal and old electrical wiring as well as reckless handling of naked fires and liquefied petroleum gas in the home.

Mr. Nemi warned people against sending insecticide sprays or strong scented body perfume closer to LP Gas since these chemicals are highly inflammable and can easily catch fire.

He advised also would be landlords and landladies to always seek advice of the GNFS in preparing the architectural designs of the buildings to ensure they are compliant with fire safety standards.

The Station Officer said due to modernity, people are now resorting to the use of combustible building materials in the construction industry while little attention is given to emergency situations.

An Elder of the Church, Opanin Osei Kofi, explained that the leadership of the church organized the fire safety education for its members to help protect them against avoidable fire outbreaks.

He said the Church does not exist only to prepare the members for eternal life, but to also seek their physical welfare while on earth.
