GOV'T. COMMISERATES WITH ASANTEMAN ON THE DEATH OF ASANTEHEMAA


A government’s delegation led by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has visited the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi to commiserate with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu and the people of Asanteman traditional area on the death of Nana Afua Serwaa Kobi Ampem, the Asantehemaa. 

Nana Afua Kobi Serwaa Ampem passed away last Monday. 

The Manhyia Palace officially informed the government through the Ashanti Regional Minister, John Alexander Ackon, of the incident yesterday/last Thursday

Also on the government’s delegation to the Manhyia Palace were prominent government and NDC functionaries who conveyed the deep condolence of President John Mahama, the government and the people of Ghana to Otumfuo Osei Tutu and Asanteman. 

The late Nana Afua Serwaa Kobi Ampem, who succeeded Nana Serwaa Nyarko in 1977 as the 13th Asantehemaa, reigned for 39 years. She was also the biological mother of the reigning occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu. 

One of Otumfuo’s linguists, Baffuor Kantankyire, told the delegation that Asanteman Traditional Council has banned all funeral, drumming and noise-making activities within Asanteman until the burial and final funeral rite of the late Asantehemaa. 

Baffuor Kantankyire announced that the traditional One Week Observation of the death will be held on Thursday, the 24th of this month during which arrangements for the burial and funeral rites will be announced. 

Later at a news conference, Asantehene’s Chief Linguists, Nana Nsuase Poku, explained that bereaved families can bury their dead members during the period of mourning. Political and other social activities can also be carried out within the Asanteman jurisdiction. 

Nana Nsuase Poku warned however that, such activities should be devoid of the usual traditional elaborate funeral rites and noise making and should be strictly complied with warning that anyone who found to have flouted the directive will be punished.
