SCRAP PUBLIC TOILETS-KNUST VC
The Vice Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Professor Kwasi Obiri-Danso has described as unacceptable the construction of public places of convenience in the country in this era.
According to him, at
this period of modernization, the priority of local government authorities is
to make it legally mandatory for landlords and landladies to provide for toilet
facilities in their properties, to enable the state to focus on more important
social needs of the people.
Speaking at the launch of a joint project between
the KNUST and the Local Government Service in Kumasi, Prof. Obiri-Danso was
particularly disgusted by a certain development in especially Accra where,
according to him, some property owners are converting washrooms in their houses
into bedrooms.
Touching on job creation, Prof. Obiri-Danso called on both the
state and society to patronize locally made goods.
He expressed regret about
the failure of both the government and society to promote made in Ghana goods
which could be significant job creation avenues for the unemployed.
Professor
Obiri-Danso mentioned in particular, the continuous use of sancrite blocks for
the construction of public building, while the Building and Road Research
Institute of the CSIR and other indigenous companies have the capacity to
manufacture burnt bricks to meet local demands.
He said the KNUST is now giving
much attention to community service by which the university is to engage in
more corporate social responsibilities to strengthen its relationship with the
outside world.
