FOUR VIE FOR NHC PREZ
The reconstituted
National House of Chiefs has scheduled tomorrow, Thursday November 24, to elect
a new President and his Vice to lead the House in the next four years.
The tenure of the current National House of
Chiefs, its President and Vice ends tomorrow with plans to inaugurate the
newly reconstituted House before the election of the new President and his
Vice.
At the close of nominations which
spanned the 16th to the 22nd of this month, four
Paramount chiefs had submitted their nominations to contest for the position of
the President of the House while three put themselves up for the election of
the Vice President.
The four contesting for the Presidency are the Agbogbomefia
of the Asogli State in the Volta region, Togbe Afede, the paramount chief of
Akyem Abuakwa in the Eastern region, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the
paramount chief of Lower Axim in the Western region, Awulae Atibrukusu, and the
paramount chief of Esikado in the Western region, Nana Kobina Nketsiah.
The
eventual winner will take over from the outgoing President of the House, Wulugu
Naaba Pugansoa, Naa Professor John Nabila, who has served the full eight year
term.
His Vice was the paramount chief of Lower Axim, Awulae Atibrukusu.
The
three contenders for the Vice Presidential position are the paramount chief of
Asebu in the Central region, Okatakyie Dr. Menfe, his colleague from the
Abeadze traditional area also in the Central region, Daasebre Kwebu Awudzi as
well as paramount chief of Lawra, Lara Naa Tuowele Karbo.
A reliable source at
the National House of Chiefs who made this known to Ashanti Today said the elections will be preceded by the swearing-in of the
50-members, five each from each of the 10 administrative regions of the
country.
After the elections, the new President and the Vice will also be
sworn-in before assuming their respective responsibilities.
The source said the
polls will be supervised by the Electoral Commission adding that so far, there
has not been any indication that any of the nominees will step down before the
elections.
