SUSPECTED EXPLOSIVES AT ASH DPTY RM RESIDENCE-THE REAL STORY

The Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Security Council and Regional Minister, John Alexander Ackon, has confirmed that, indeed, two boxes believed to be containing explosives were found behind the fence wall of National Security Communications building in Kumasi that shares wall with the official residence of the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Andy Osei Okrah last Monday.

A statement signed by the Regional Minister and issued to the media in Kumasi today, Thu Nov. 3,  explained that it was one 'Ex Warrant Officer Class One Boadi who first found the boxes at 4:25 pm last Monday and subsequently reported it to the 4BN'

According to the statement, the Police were also informed accordingly following which military personnel were dispatched to the scene.

After a careful assessment, the boxes were found to contain suspected Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs.

This was made up of 'two seven point-five LPG Cylinders filled with gas in addition to one Timer device, one Remote Control, two Explosives, two safety fuses, two detonators and two dynamites'

The statement said the military personnel implemented a mitigating measure by packing sand bags around the boxes containing the suspected IEDs and also cordoned off the scene.

This measure was to 'subdue the effects of explosion and absorb fragments of any possible explosion'

It said the following day, which was the Tuesday, an Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team successfully diffused the Explosive Devices.

The statement said a third cylinder was taken away on a motorbike and believed to have been dropped by men on a motorbike with the intention of creating multiple explosions.

It said all the 'items identified can be acquired locally from miners and stone quarry companies and that the items could have been acquired locally through individuals or companies who use explosives at their work places'

The statement assured that the Ashanti Regional Police Command is still investigating the incident to unravel the motive behind it and to also bring the suspects to book.

It therefore asked members of the public to remain calm and go about their normal lawful duties since the security of Kumasi in particular, and Ashanti in general, is under control.
