CULTURE, TRADITION AT THEIR BEST AT MANHYIA

The much touted rich culture and traditions of Asanteman were on full display today as hundreds of mourners and well wishers thronged the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi, the citadel of culture and tradition, today, Thu., Nov. 24, to observe the traditional One Week Observance of the death of the 13th Asantehemaa, Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem.

Asantehenmaa passed away on the 14th of this month. She was the biological mother of the current occupant of the Golden Stool, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, and reigned for 39 years after succeeding Nana Serwaa Nyarko in1977.

Among the prominent mourners at the traditional One Week Observance were President John Mahama, the two surviving former Presidents, Johns Rawlings and Agyekum Kuffuor, some Ministers of State, members of the reconstituted National House of Chiefs, the Standard bearer of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo, delegations from the various political parties, some MPs, former ministers, the suspended National Chairman of the NPP, Paul Afoko, renowned traditional rulers from various parts of the country and beyond as well as some members of the clergy.

On display were the various traditional drumming and dances such as Kete, Adowa and Fontonfrom while the dancers exhibited their outstanding dancing prowess to the admiration of the mourners some of who were held spellbound.

On the other hand, the paramount chiefs were also accompanied by large retinues of sub-chiefs and subjects including the Executioners whose fearful physical appearance and costume and antics nearly scared some of the mourners away.

Meanwhile, our Correspondent reports that both commercial and social activities in the regional capital, particularly in the central business district as well as the neighbourhood of the Manhyia Palace reduced substantially.

This resulted in significant reduction in the usually heavy human and vehicular congestion within the city thereby ensuring easy movement of both pedestrians and the vehicles that ply the metropolis.
