ASHANTI REMEMBRANCE DAY OBSERVED

A Remembrance ceremony has been held at the Cenotaph at Adum today in honour of all the Ghanaian soldiers who lost their lives during the World War One and also for their selflessness in the interest of humanity.

Highlight of the Remembrance Day was the sounding of the Last Post at exactly 11 am, which signifies the exact hour that all hostilities during the First World War were brought to an end.

At the Ashanti Regional celebration were a delegation of the Regional Coordinating Council led by the Ashanti Regional Minister, John Alexander Ackon, a representation of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly headed by the Metro Coordinating Director, Michael Ataogye, a 168-member contingent and nine officers of all the security services, some veteran soldiers and members of the general public.

 Four wreaths were laid.

The Regional Minister laid the first one on behalf of the government and people of Ghana, the second one by the Commanding Officer of the Fourth Infantry Battalion, Colonel Fuseini Salifu, on behalf of the Ghana Armed Forces and other security services, the other by the Bantamahene, Baffuor Asare Owusu Amankwatia on behalf of the traditional authority and the community, while the Regional Chairman of the Veterans Association of Ghana, VAG, Ex-Warrant Officer Aboagye DaCosta laid one on behalf of all veterans.

The ceremony was interspersed with prayers to repose the souls of the fallen soldiers during the First World War, cultural performances by the Amammreso Agofomma of the Centre for National Culture, Hymns, Bible and Quran recitals as well as an appellation in memory of the departed soldiers.

There was also a parade by a contingent of the Veterans Association of Ghana to the admiration of the crowd.

Unlike in previous celebrations, this year’s occasion was devoid of speeches as the solemnity of the event was strictly observed.
