O.A. TRANSPORT WINS SAFER TRANPORTER AWARD

Transport Services Limited has been adjudged the Best Safer Commercial
Passenger Transport Union at this year’s Ashanti Region Road Safety Awards held
in Kumasi on Wednesday.
For its award, the organization was presented with a
plaque, citation, certificate, while 10 of its drivers will have the privilege
of attending free two days refresher training in defensive driving.
STC and VIP
transport organizations took the second and third positions in the Safer
Commercial Passenger Transport Union and organization category.
Martyrs of
Uganda Preparatory and Presbyterian International Schools both in Kumasi were
adjudged the Road Safety Oriented Basic Schools for this year, while Sunsum FM,
a private radio station in Kumasi and Oli Best Road Safety Organization were adjudged
as the Best Road Safety Advocates.
The theme for the occasion was, “Recognizing
Good Practices that Enhance Road Safety”.
The Regional Road Safety Awards
scheme was instituted by the National Road Safety Commission in 2010 to reward
commercial road transport operators, the media, corporate institutions and
individuals who contribute exceedingly towards minimizing road traffic crashes.
This year’s event was extended to rewarding basic schools that have made self
efforts to protect the lives of their pupils on the road.
In an address read
for him, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Peter Anarfi-Mensah said between
January and September this year, 10 thousand 558 crashes were recorded resulting
in one thousand 538 deaths and nine thousand 741 injuries.
Mr. Anarfi-Mensah
described the situation is unacceptable adding that it will require a lot more
than the conventional approach to road safety management.
The Regional Police
Commander, DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye emphasized that road safety challenges are
beyond the driver.
According to him, it takes strong institutions to get
drivers to act as professionals and in a desirable manner for the public good.
The Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission, Ingineer Samuel
Obeng Asiamah said his outfit will intensify its education and enforcement
programmes, especially as the yuletide approaches.
