NORTHERN YOUTH ATTACK MARTIN AMIDU
A
group calling itself ‘The Concerned Youth of the North’ based in Kumasi has taken a 'serious exception to what it calls
the unrestrained comments' made by a former Minister of Justice and
Attorney-General, Martin Amidu.
The group has therefore given the former
Minister a week’s ultimatum to retract and render an unqualified apology to all
Ghanaians of northern extraction.
A statement jointly signed by President of
the group, Clement Chirewole Kegeri, and the Secretary, Tolbert Atoya and
issued to the media in Kumasi, noted that it is strange that Mr. Amidu, who is
expected to motivate his fellow northern brothers and siblings to strive for
greater heights would rather resort to negative attacks and prediction of doom of
future of the northern youth.
The statement described the attacks by the former
Attorney-General on people of the north as a desperate attempt to shift the
goal posts when investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas dared him to
substantiate his claims that government sponsored a recent expose on judicial corruption
in the country.
It notes also that in Mr.
Amidu’s quest to demonstrate his deep-seated bitterness and hatred for
President John Mahama who also comes from the north, claims that by the
performance of the President, it will take people from the northern part of
Ghana many years to get one of their own elected again as President of the
country.
The statement noted that by the this stance, Mr. Amidu has proven his
frustration and vindictiveness adding that he is intentionally cursing the
incoming generation of the north just because he was not able to become a
President of the land.
The statement reminded Mr. Amidu that people of the north
are not only recognized as 'incorruptible, honest and hardworking, but they are
also not traitors, envious, vindictive and jealous of others'.
It said 'if Mr.
Amidu would not inspire hope in the younger generation from the north, he should
not curse' them either.
The statement expressed regret that an astute lawyer of
Mr. Amidu’s stature would still not accept the fact that President Mahama is
not President for the people of the north but for the whole of Ghana.
Additionally, there is no evidence to prove that President Mahama was elected
on the basis of his background as a northerner.
The statement is therefore
urging Mr. Amidu to be humble enough to retract and apologize for his outburst.
