GOVERNMENT TO EXPAND ACCESS TO SECONDARY EDUCATION-PROF. OPOKU AGYEMANG
The Minister of
Education, Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang says a recent national survey
has revealed that there are more children than adult Ghanaians.
This then
requires that more formal educational facilities are provided by the state to
increase access to education particularly at the basic and second cycle levels.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Nkwanta Community Day Senior High School in
the Volta region, Professor Opoku Agyemang explained that the construction of
the Community Day Senior High schools across the country is therefore part of government’s
measures to create the room for many more Junior High School graduates who
could not have continued their formal education, to remain in school, at least
to the secondary school stage.
The Minister noted that even though some people
are criticisizing the 38 Ghana Cedi
government subsidy in line with its progressively free secondary education, the
amount means a lot for especially parents and guardians in difficult economic
circumstances who therefore very much appreciate the intervention.
The policy,
Professor Opoku Agyemang disclosed is being well targeted at students from
truly poor homes to make it meaningful.
For this reason, she explained,
students who are already benefitting from various scholarship schemes will not
enjoy the new subsidy.
The Education Minister repeated her earlier warning to
heads of public schools to adhere strictly to the Ghana Education
Service-approved school fees.
Those who flout this directive, she insisted,
will be dealt with according to the regulations of the Service and urged
influential members of the society to stop interfering when sanctions are being
applied against such deviant school heads.
Professor Opoku Agyemang advised the
first batch of students of the Community Day Senior High Schools to take
advantage of the opportunity to learn very hard to achieve the best of academic
results.
To this end, they should stay away from bad practices such as pre-marital
sex that can lead them to teen age pregnancies and school dropout.
