RESEARCH AT KNUST BOOSTED
The Kwame
Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, KNUST, has set up a Research Fund
with a seed capital of 100 thousand Ghana Cedis from the university’s
internally generated revenue.
The Fund is meant to build the research capacity of
both the staff and departments.
The Vice Chancellor, Professor William Otoo
Ellis disclosed this in Kumasi at this year’s graduation ceremony for final
year students of the university.
He explained further that setting up the
Research Fund aimed also to encourage applied, problem-solving and multidisciplinary
study for socio-economic development of the country and Africa.
Professor Otoo
Ellis said applicants for funds must be able to come out with research
proposals with the potential to help solve national challenges and produce
readily implementable outcomes for economic and human development.
The KNUST
Research Fund is in addition to the 300 thousand Ghana Cedi MTN Telecoms
Research and Innovations Fund for study into telecommunication at the College
of Engineering.
The Vice Chancellor mentioned also KNUST’s partnership with the
Tony Elumelu Foundation of Nigeria to recognize, celebrate and promote
excellence in education as well as build a network of future African leaders.
He said, as part of the partnership, the Tony Elumelu Foundation awarded the
overall best graduating student of the KNUST, the best graduating student in
Economics, Engineering, Agriculture and Computer Science with a cash prize of
one thousand 400 US Dollars each.
Professor Otoo Ellis thanked all corporate
organizations and individuals who through diverse means assisted the KNUST
during the ending academic year.
