LEAP DISBURSEMENT STARTS TOMORROW

The Department of Social Development formerly called the Department of Social Welfare will begin the disbursement of the next tranche of stipends to beneficiaries of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty, LEAP Programme in the Ashanti region from tomorrow, Tuesday 21st of this month.

There are currently over eight thousand beneficiaries under the LEAP in 13 administrative districts in the region.

The Ashanti Regional Director of the Department, Benjamin Otoo made this known to Ashanti Today in Kumasi.

Mr. Otoo said three of the beneficiary districts are being expanded in terms of the number of the beneficiary households, while targeting is underway in nine new districts to rope in more vulnerable households into the social intervention programme.

Mr. Otoo disclosed that the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection is working hard to increase the number of beneficiary households on the programme from 190 thousand, 162 to 200 thousand across the country by the end of this year.

He noted that the intervention is highly appreciated in the rural communities where poverty is pronounced than in the urban centres, stressing that it will be insensitive for any disbursing official to demand or accept reward in cash or kind from the very people who are being assisted to improve on their living standard.

Mr. Otoo mentioned inclusion errors, mobilization as well as poor road network as some of the challenges undermining the disbursement of the LEAP funds.

He assured that everything possible is being done to eliminate the occurrence of inclusion errors, which is about the capturing of persons who either may be qualified for the funds or genuine exclusion of truly eligible persons from benefiting from the intervention to improve on the impact of the programme.
