SCHOOL PUPILS TO ENJOY ADDITIONAL NUTRITIONAL MEALS

The Government in collaboration with Hershey Company in the USA will soon introduce and distribute a highly fortified groundnut nutritional supplement for pupils enrolled under the Ghana School Feeding Programme.

The initiative dubbed, “Energizing Learning Nutrition Project” is to run as a two year pilot in six districts in the Ashanti and Northern regions, aimed at providing the needed nutritious meals for children of school going age to promote and increase school attendance.

At the Ashanti Regional launch of the project in Kumasi, the Regional Coordinator of the Ghana School Feeding Programme, Madam Ophelia Antwi-Boasiako said nutritional problems facing school-aged children include obesity, eating disorders, dental caries and anaemia.

She therefore described as opportune, the launch of the “Energizing Learning Nutrition Project” that seeks to provide nutritional supplement, which is a source of quality protein and fiber fortified with vitamins and minerals to children of school going age.

Madam Antwi-Boasiako said for farmers and agricultural development in the country, there are immense benefits to be derived from the project.

According to her, the project will procure all the raw materials from farmers locally.

This means that farmers will have the opportunity to increase their production of groundnuts and peanuts in order to meet the demands of the project.

She noted however that the capacity of groundnut farmers will be built in order to reduce Aflatoxin levels in order to meet international standards.

The Regional Minister, Peter Anarfi-Mensah said Government has developed a school feeding policy which is awaiting Cabinet approval.

He said government sees school feeding as an investment and will therefore do everything possible to make School Feeding Programme a success story.

It is in this respect that a legal consultant has been engaged to further develop the school feeding policy into a legislative instrument.
