KUWAITI NGO ASSISTS GHANAIAN DISASTER VICTIMS


The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur, has presented relief items to victims of the recent flood that occurred in the Asokore Mampong Municipality. 

The items worth thousands of Ghana Cedis which included mattresses, blankets, tomato paste and bags of rice, were donated by DirectAid, an International NGO based in Kuwait. 

At a ceremony at Asawase to present the relief items to 240 out of the 804 affected people, Nana Oye Lithur expressed government’s sympathy to the victims. 

She said government has set up an emergency fund to cater for victims of the flood. 

The Minister announced that the Asokore Mampong Municipality has now been added to the LEAP with at least a target number of 400 to be registered in September this year. 

The Asokore Mampong Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Nurudeen Hamidan, said the cause of the recent flood in the area has been identified and that remedial action is being taken to avert its recurrence. 

On behalf of the victims, he expressed gratitude to the government for showing genuine concern to in this time of grief. 

The Country Director of DirectAid, Ahmed Omar, was hopeful the items would go a long way to give some relief to the affected persons.

 Communities in the municipality affected by the flood were Asawase, Aboabo and the Airport round about area.

Earlier, the Minister in the company of one her Deputies, John Alexander Ackon, visited the SOS Children’s Village and the Borstal home to ascertain the conditions there.
